Pirate Brett Captains Canada

By Phil Westren

In a match when former ‘Pirate’ Aaron Carpenter equalled Al Charron’s test record of 76 caps for Canada, present day Pirate, lock Brett Beukeboom, also had the honour of captaining the side.

The wind and rain, however, at Calgary Rugby Park on Saturday made conditions difficult against Georgia, and the Canucks lost 13-0. At the end of the game Brett, who during the week had been named as a co-captain of Canada, commented:

“Thousands turned up to support our team, so credit to them on such a wet and cold day.

“We knew the inclement conditions would be very difficult, but I think we can learn from our mistakes and we can take those learnings into the next three games."

After facing Romania in Edmonton next Saturday, Canada will host the US Eagles in Hamilton on June 24 in the opening leg of its World Cup qualifying series. The return leg is set for July 1 in San Diego
