JOHN EDGECOMBE – ‘MEMORIAL’ GATHERING
13-06-2006
There were many rugby players of a certain vintage who
were saddened to hear that John Edgecombe, sometimes referred to as ‘Jan’, ‘Proper
Job’ or ‘Edgy’, passed away last October in Oxfordshire, aged 75.
One
of life’s real characters, John was a big man who was proud of his Cornish rugby
roots, a second row forward who played a total of 305 games for the Pirates in
the fifties and sixties.
After his playing days had ended he served
on the executive committee of Penzance & Newlyn RFC, and wasted no time later
in then getting involved with Oxford RFC when he moved to that area and married
Elizabeth Marigold, a headteacher.
In his early years he lived in Victoria
Square, Penzance, before joining the Navy as a boy cadet when he was just 15.
He served on HMS Ganges and on his return to Penzance worked for the Western National
bus company. Spells with Ken Tregarthen and Joe Kay then followed as an electrician,
before he returned once more to Western National.
A ‘Memorial’ gathering
to celebrate John’s life will take place at the Pirates Rugby Club on Saturday
24th. June, kick-off at 2.30p.m.
Family, friends and former rugby playing
colleagues of John are cordially invited to attend the occasion. For further information
