McKAY PRAISES TEAM EFFORT 20-09-2005

CORNISH Pirates coach Jim McKay hailed his team after they kicked-off life at Kenwyn with a resounding 43-13 victory over the visiting Earth Titans.

Winger Richard Welding claimed five tries, while Wes Davies and Matt Jess also found their way onto the scoresheet as the Pirates made it three wins from three with this triumph.

A delighted McKay said afterwards: "Today was really do or die for us, losing wasn't really an option. After all the build-up to everything we knew we had to deliver a big performance - and we did.

"I'm very happy with the way the boys performed. Full credit to Rotherham , they're a good side, but it was good to show what we can do when we're on the front-foot. Our execution was much better today and we scored some very good tries out there."

Welding's five-try salvo ensured his picked up the man of the match accolade, but his efforts also meant he was able to add his name to the record list for most tries in a Division One game.

McKay added: "Richard will obviously get the headlines, but I wouldn't like to single anyone out for special praise. It was a really good team performance and it sets us up nicely for next week at Exeter ."

The Australian was also delighted with the backing of the Cornish support, he said: "I thought the atmosphere was great. It has been a difficult couple of weeks for all the management team, but full credit to everyone for what they've done. Today was a big victory for us and hopefully we can move everything on from here."

McKay confirmed post whistle that flanker Iva Motusaga is expected to be sidelined for at least a month with a knee injury sustained during his side's narrow win at Newbury a fortnight ago.
