Cornish Pirates Academy V Leicester
'Tigers' Academy U19s Following our openers against Westcountry Warriors and a Launceston Development side, we are delighted to welcome - for the first time - representatives of the mighty Leicester club.
Leicester 'Tigers' has a significant history of developing home-grown talent, producing such legends as Martin Johnson and Graham Rowntree back in the amateur era. When the game went professional in 1996, Leicester recognised that a clear programme was needed to develop promising youngsters, & that a structure should be established on a parallel path to the senior squad. In 1998 the Leicester Tigers Academy was established, every player exposed to a programme of rugby and body development, balanced against their education. Some of the first players to come through the system included England internationals Ollie Smith, Louis Deacon and Harry Ellis. It is also likely that a number of this evening's players will go on to greater things - and not just from Leicester. Robin Cowling - who played for Leicester & England - and his colleagues at the SWERA Academy Truro, have had an important role in the development of young Cornish players. It is no coincidence that Truro College won the British Colleges Cup last season & a number will surely make their mark in this game. The President of the Cornish Pirates - Dicky Evans - is also tremendously supportive and keen to give them their chance.
