Cornish Pirates supported the MAKE POVERTY HISTORY campaign at the beginning of
December, 2005 | The crowd, who
were issued with white sheets of paper pre-match, standing as one at half-time
to make a symbolic white band around the ground. Also present
at the game were MPH volunteer workers who had a stall near the main
entrance of the Kenwyn ground. They work to raise money to support children
and young people living with their mums in womens refuges in West Cornwall.
42 children from within the county were given this support in 2005. Pupils
and representatives of Archbishop Benson CE School, Trewirgie Junior School, Burraton
and Warbstow CP Schools, who had taken part in a tag rugby exhibition
at Kenwyn made the collection . | | | |
A
number of charitable collections took place at the Kenwyn ground last season 2005/06 These
included:- a) A collection made by BOLINGEY BARBARIANS
at the opening match in 2006 v Doncaster. Bolingey Barbarians were formed in 1990
with three specific objectives: - To raise money for deserving organisations
who look after children in Cornwall.
- To return to and enjoy the time
when rugby was played solely for enjoyment both during the match and, more importantly,
after the match.
- To only select and play against players who were over
35 years of age.
Each season all three objectives are met by playing
no more than 6 matches and after each match returning to the Bolingey Inn to host
the opposition in true old fashioned tradition. Perranporth RFC very kindly loan
use of the ground and changing rooms for home matches. Also, at the end of the
season a tournament is held for invited veteran teams which is hosted at different
clubs each year. To date Bolingey Barbarians have raised over £27,000,
and have presented various amounts of money to organisations which include Scibu,
Cornwall Diabetic Centre, Murdock Trevithick, Penhaligons Friends, the Joey
Appeal, Wooden Spoon, Spectrum, Friends of Pencalinick, Double Trees, the Tsunami
Appeal, and Hear our Voices. The amount raised at the Doncaster game totalled
£ 1,1613-82. b) Back in November, when we played a Powergen National
Trophy match against Wharfedale on the Mennaye Field, a collection was held to
raise funds for our Mini-Junior Section.
d) A Collection
was held at the Harlequins game for CVOC (Child Victims of Crime),
the only national police childrens charity administered by the British Police
Rugby Section.
