The Winning Website | Film 'Autumn' | Film 'Making The Movie' Wednesday 13th June 2007 Talented young website designers from Mousehole Primary School have beaten 25 study centres throughout the South of England including, Gloucester RUFC, Reading FC and Southampton FC, to win first prize in a multi media competition staged by South West Consortium of the Playing for Success Centres.
Pupils from the School have attended the Pirates Learning Zone, based at the Cornish Pirates Rugby Club in Penzance, which is part of the national Playing for Success Programme that has educational centres based in professional sports clubs. The aim of the Playing for Success initiative is to use professional sports, ranging from football and rugby to outdoor adventure, to help motivate children and young people and encourage them to develop skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT. Cornwall has four Playing for Success projects - the Pirates Learning Zone, the Porthpean Adventure Zone for Learning, the Penryn Playing for Success Study Support Centre, and the Delaware Adventure Zone for Learning Study Support Centre. The competition, sponsored by Tewkesbury based 'AT Computers', was aimed at encouraging young people to get excited in using new technology and to submit a multi media magazine based on life at their sports club. Kevin Jackson, Centre Manager at the Pirates Learning Zone, commented: "Year 6 pupils from Mousehole School attended the Zone in the autumn term, with our representatives then going into the School earlier this year to work alongside the Year 5 pupils. They all worked very hard on their entry and I am delighted they have been so successful."
Revisiting Mousehole School on Wednesday, along with colleagues Kate Barden and Ross Jones, Kevin presented teacher Caroline Newborn with the prize of a new 'IMac' computer. Also present at a full school assembly were Cornish Pirates representatives Adrian Edwards and Geoff Nicholas, who took along with them the EDF Energy National Trophy won by their team at Twickenham in April, it a gesture appreciated by all of the pupils.
