Winnan Heads Home 25-07-2006 FORMER Saracens star
Adryan Winnan is heading home to Cornwall after finalising his move to National
League One side, the Cornish Pirates. Having spent the past two seasons
plying his trade in the French Leagues with Tarbes, the 23-year-old is returning
to his native Cornwall and is ready to play his part in the Pirates push for honours
this season. Winnan is the latest in a string of new arrivals for the Pirates,
joining the likes of Henry Barrett, Steve Winn, Duncan Bell, Stanley McKeen, Gasolo
Salima and Alberto Di Bernardo in signing up for the new campaign | | | However,
despite his somewhat tender years, Winnan the son of former Cornwall full-back,
Paul comes with an already proven rugby CV, having featured previously
for Penryn, Redruth and Ivybridge Community College, before hitting the big time
with Guinness Premiership side Saracens. It was with
Sarries that Winnan first made his name, working alongside the likes of proven
international stars such as Tim Horan, Richard Hill, Francois Pinnear and Thomas
Castaignede His rise did not go unnoticed and in 2002 he
was voted the club’s Supporters’ Player of the Year. During his three seasons
with the top flight club, Winnan amassed 39 league appearances for the club, six
as replacement, scoring 31 points. He also played in the club’s three European
Challenge Cup campaigns between 2001-2004, making 11 appearances, four as replacement,
scoring 70 points. | | | | The
opportunity of a move to France – with Tarbes – then beckoned for the 6’2, 14st
8lb former England Under-21 international. However, after two seasons with the
club, Winnan was a free agent this summer and the Pirates wasted little time in
bringing him back to his native county. Pirates coach Jim McKay
said: “We are delighted to welcome Adryan on board. He is a quality player, returning
to his roots, and he’ll be hungry to achieve success. |
