Sport and technology used to inspire young people in literacy - January 07

Young people across the southwest are being invited to take part in an exciting multi media competition through the Playing for Success (PfS) scheme.

The competition aims to excite young people in the use of new technology and advance their skills in ICT through producing a multi media magazine.

The competition is sponsored by Tewkesbury based 'AT Computers' who supply Apple computers to the educational market. Managing Director, Liz Higgin's said "This competition is a great opportunity to showcase how young people can use technology to improve their skills not only in ICT, but also areas such as literacy and problem solving".

The competition is being organised by Playing for Success in the South West, who have educational centres based in professional sports clubs across the region. PfS centres use the environment and medium of professional sports ranging from football through to horseracing and outdoor adventure to help motivate children and young people as well as develop skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT.

Each PfS centre will summit a multi media magazine based on 'life at their sports club'. Centres will encourage their students to be a creative as possible, so young people could be working on anything from a pod cast featuring their own interview with a professional football player, through to writing a comic about the most recent fixture.

Richard Holmes, PfS Centre Manager at Gloucester Rugby Club said "This is such an innovative project to be involved in, as it shows how education uses technology and sport to inspire young people to reach their full potential in core subject areas."

The project' sponsor's have provided some exciting incentives including 'ipods' and an 'imac' computer. The entries will be judged in April, by a board of creative industry professionals who will award the prizes.
