With
the signing announcements recently made, it is clear that the Cornish Pirates
are looking to recruit a squad for next season that is clearly capable of pushing
for promotion to the Premiership. It has been an exciting few days, with the week
ending on a high for rugby supporters when the Pirates host Plymouth Albion at
Camborne on Sunday. Cornwall versus Devon 'derby' match
contests are always eagerly awaited, but this one has just a little extra spice
added, if any was needed. As we all now know, two of Albion's best forwards will
be crossing the Tamar to play for the Pirates next season, namely back-rower Jannie
Bornman and lock Ben Gulliver, with South African Jannie selected at No. 8 to
face his future colleagues. For the Pirates, Canadian international
scrum-half Ed Fairhurst is still out injured, him joined on the sidelines by wing
Jimmy Moore. Tongan Vunga Lilo, who has just returned from playing for his country
in the Hong Kong Sevens, will play in Jimmy's berth out wide. Plymouth
Albion were promoted to National One in 2002, with the Pirates joining Graham
Dawe's men just a year later. Since that first season we
have played each other nine times in league and cup games, with there a 6-3 win
ratio in Albion's favour, plus a 202-163 points advantage. All close - yes, but
it high time for us to start balancing the figures! Match
day entertainment will include a visit by the superb Camborne Town Band, whilst
after the game the loyal and immensely popular Cadgwith Singers will be 'striking
up' in the marquee. Tickets can be purchased from the ticket
office 01736-331961 (Mon-Fri 9am - 1pm is best), plus all
the usual outlets, and The On-Line Pirates
