recorded one of the shocks of the season when winning 27-17 at Doncaster two weeks
ago, 'Cov' followed this up with a bonus point providing 28-7 points home win
against Sedgley Park last weekend. Influential player-coach Brett Davey crossed
for one of their four tries, all of which were converted by skipper Ben Russell. The
Cornish Pirates scraped home 16-15 in the corresponding fixture early in January,
and were also relieved 17-16 points injury-time winners when departing Coventry's
Butts Park Arena home back in September, so a tough game is all but guaranteed. Injuries
to a number of players has made it partly inevitable that the Cornish Pirates
team shows wholesale changes from the one that started at Northampton. Peter
Cook, Darren Dawidiuk and Dan Seal form a completely new front-row trio, Scott
Hobson replaces an injured Bruce Cumming in the second rank, and Iva Motusaga
returns as open-side flanker. Ollie Thomas, who sat out
last week on the bench, is given another chance in the pivotal fly-half role,
where he performed with distinction when the Pirates last played at home against
the Cornish All Blacks. Out wide, Jimmy Moore takes one
of the wing berths against his former club, and with Steve Winn injured there
is also a chance for Paul Devlin to impress at inside centre. One
other positional change sees Vunga Lilo, a try-scoring wing against the Saints
and who had previously played in the centre for the Pirates, this time selected
at full-back - which is where he played for Tonga at the Rugby World Cup.
