Sunday the Cornish Pirates will extend their usual sporting welcome to Newbury,
against whom they've had some super contests in recent years. Having
finished eleventh in National Division One last season, the 'Blues' are presently
tenth and arrive at Camborne on the back of a 55-24 points defeat away to Nottingham
in their EDF Energy National Trophy Round 4 match played at Meadow Lane, Nottingham,
last Sunday. In the league last time out they won 20-18
at home to Sedgley Park. Looking at the results mentioned,
it would appear that perhaps a home win is on the cards, especially with it also
remembered that the Pirates won 48-18 at Newbury's Monk Lane ground in September.
Easy? No, there too many good players in the visiting side
side to take anything for granted, with it also noted that back in December they
only lost 24-23 away to Northampton Saints. One wish for us all is that the weather
has improved sufficiently for our Colin to help get the ground back in shape after
last week, as we would then have the prospect of witnessing an entertaining game
of rugby football - which against Sunday's visitors is usually guaranteed. Tim
Walsh, a former Aussie 'Sevens' player, is named to skipper the visiting Berkshire
outfit, their selection also including two former Pirates in flanker Chris Morgan
and wing Jonny Hylton. The Pirates will be welcoming a number
of players back from injury, with there also a number of likely squad rotation
changes. In total there will be eight changes from the
side that started last Saturday against Northampton Saints, including a virtually
completely new set of backs. Indeed, only Gareth Steenson
remains in the pivotal fly-half position, whilst two changes in the forwards see
No. 8 Matt Evans and flanker Sam Betty replace Tim Cowley and Iva Motusaga, both
of whom are named on the bench. It is hoped to have a standing
ovation of applause in respect of Dicky who resigned as President last week. This
will likely be pre-match, so please make sure you are safely in the ground by
1.30p.m. He won't be present, but it'll be a statement
of action and noise that supporters will make so loud and clear that he'll be
able to hear it all the way to Kenya! |
