At the end of a busy rugby season most players have the chance to take it easy for a few weeks, but not Penzance & Newlyn RFC's Wayne Davey.

The captain of the Pirates 'Amateurs', who also coaches the Pirates Colts, Wayne will be called upon to show all the commitment he shows on the rugby field, and a great, great deal more besides when he participates in the 'Woodvale North Atlantic Challenge 2008'.

As a member of a four-man rowing team, Wayne will join three 'Scillonians' for the challenge of a lifetime, their aim to beat the record for crossing the Atlantic from New York to Bishop Rock lighthouse, which presently stands at 55 days 13 hours.

The Transatlantic Challenge starts from the Statute of Liberty on the 1st June, the first such unsupported crossing of the Atlantic, and their team the only one that will actually be rowing towards home!

Wayne is born and bred Cornishman who lives in Newlyn and is a member of the Penlee Lifeboat.

Aged 30, he has played professional rugby in the past, and has also been employed by the Westcountry Ambulance Service since 2001 as a paramedic.

His rowing colleagues are Chris Jenkins, Tim Garratt and Joby Newton.

All four, who will fly to New York this weekend, are keen to look at this project with an aim to support worthwhile charity causes:RNLI 'Train One, Save Many' - Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust - 'Above and Beyond' enhancing Bristol's Special Baby Care Unit, and Breakthrough Breast Cancer

The training and preparation has been immense, as they will have to be in a peak state of fitness, rowing two hours on, and two hours off, 24/7.

It is predicted that they will each burn 10,000 calories a day, so 1,500 specially prepared meals will be carried aboard their vessel "Scilly Boys" .

People on the Isles of Scilly, the mainland and beyond will follow their efforts with interest, and it is certain to provide fascinating project material for youngsters attending the Cornish Pirates Learning Zone.
