Cornish Pirates

Matt & Rhodri Get 'Barbarians' Call Up

Squad News
November 9th 2007

Only a small number of Pirates have had the honour of playing for the Barbarians over the years, including such as John MacG. K. Kendall-Carpenter, John 'Ginger' Williams, Jimmy Glover, 'Stack' Stevens and Mike Luke.

It is, therefore, with great pleasure that we can now announce that two present members of the Cornish Pirates squad, Matt Evans and Rhodri McAtee, have been selected to represent this uniquely special invitation side.

The Barbarians will play the Combined Services in the 'Remembrance Day Match at Plymouth Albion's 'Brickfields' ground on Wednesday 14th. November, kick-off at 7p.m.

Matt will start at No. 8, a just reward for the popular South African who has shown immense spirit and fortitude in recovering from two serious ankle injuries.

Rhodri, who has played for Wales at 7-a-side level, will likely feature off the bench. Two players from the Cornish All Blacks, Andy Birkett and Tony Roques, are also in the Barbarians squad.

A former 'Pirate', Falmouth-born Royal Navy skipper Dave Pascoe, who is presently playing for Redruth, will lead the Combined Services team, one which will include powerful Fijian winger Apolosi Satala, who plays for Leeds Carnegie alongside Alberto Di Bernardo and Viliami Ma'asi.

The Barbarians, a 'club' formed by Percy Carpmael back in 1890, will be coached by former England international Graham Dawe, the team line-up listing players the quality of Gonzalo Quesada (Argentina).

This 'Remembrance Match' will benefit the Royal British Legion 'Poppy' Appeal, it rightly considered important that rugby people should respond as best they can to support those who are now in such great need.
