4th December 2007

I was back in August that the Cornish Pirates made a surprise visit to Little Bridge House, a Children's Hospice South West respite centre in North Devon.

Head Coach, Jim McKay, commented at the time that "We were all blown away by the service the CHSW provides to children and families from the region. After meeting some of the children the hospice supports, the squad were really inspired, and as a group we were all very keen to lend support."

Early in September the CHSW launched their 'Precious Lives Appeal' to open a new hospice to service the families of Cornwall and Plymouth, the Cornish Pirates were also delighted to welcome Eddie Farwell - CEO and co-founder of CHSW - to their match against Northampton Saints.

A collection was made at half-time and on the exit gates which realised the magnificent sum of £1329-00 for the appeal.

Following the collection made at the start of the season, the players and staff then decided to grow moustaches for the month of Mo-vember, their aim to raise further funds for CHSW, which they did when they played Rotherham Titans.

It was just over two weeks into moustache growing time, when the players took the opportunity to show off their acquired growth and make a further collection which boosted CHSW funds by an extra £817-00.

With the arrival of December, moustaches could be shaved off, but only after a 'prize' giving ceremony and MO-Ball was held at the Corn Exchange, Camborne.

This doubled as both a social event and a fundraiser, popular Cornish Pirates flanker Iva Motusaga putting a great deal of effort into making it successful - with a further £ 345-00 raised.

Prize winners at the Mo-Ball were:

  • Napoleon Dyna-MO (Ginger Mo) - Peter Cook

  • Catwalk Male MO-del - Bruce Cumming

  • MO-jo (Sexiest Mo) - Ed Fairhurst

  • MO-bro (Brown brothers Mo) - Nathan Kemp

  • No-MO (guys who could not grow anything during the month) - Darren Dawidiuk

At 'shave time' a number of players visited the 'Cut Loose' Hair Salon in Market Jew Street, Penzance, where Danielle Hosking performed the deed of painlessly removing the moustaches.

Speaking on behalf of the players, Iva was keen to thank everyone who had supported their efforts during Mo-vember.

Boots, The Body Shop and Cut Loose Hair Salon had donated prizes for the MO-Ball, and there were thanks also to Steve Skinner and St. Austell Brewery, plus the Corn Exchange along with Tony and staff at The Corn Grill.

With nearly £2500 raised for CHSW by the Cornish Pirates and their supporters, it is hoped to organise further fund raising ventures for this worthy cause in the future.
