'Junior Athlete Education' (JAE) Scheme at Humphry Davy School
May 08

Cornish Pirates players have recently delivered an 'Inspiring Workshop' at Humphry Davy School, Penzance.

The school has set up a programme initiated by the Youth Sports Trust called the 'Junior Athlete Education' (JAE) Scheme, which is aimed at supporting their gifted and talented physical education students by offering a mentoring system to maximise their sporting and academic potential.

Alan Paver, Scott Hobson, Iva Motusaga and Sam Betty kindly agreed to visit the school and work with selected pupils, delivering a workshop that demonstrated an exciting insight into the world of a sporting professional. The players talked about the pros and cons of competing at a high level and the determination, drive and attributes needed to succeed.

The JAE group are made up of pupils who are county level and above in their sport. They meet on a regular basis to discuss their sporting path, and share experiences and ideas.

A key element of the programme is to offer the students a range of workshops and fitness challenges.

In response to the visit from the Cornish Pirates, 13 years old student Tom Holdsworth said:
"It was great to personally meet the players and ask them questions, it making me realise what they do when they are not playing matches. I want to be a professional one day and it helped me understand what I need to do."
