Simon Raynes Teaches The 'Haka'

10/05/07

Pupils at Mount Charles School, St. Austell, recently undertook a project on New Zealand, a country renowned for developing many of the world's greatest rugby players.

The School had also taken part in a 'tag' rugby exhibition at Camborne at the Pirates last home match of the season.

Continuing the rugby theme Simon Raynes, Strength & Conditioning Coach at the Cornish Pirates, a Kiwi himself, attended the School with Team Manager Adrian Edwards, both of whom had just returned from the World Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly.

Adrian and Simon took the EDF Energy National Trophy, the focal point of their talk on the path the team took to the Twickenham final in April - highlighting the focus, dedication, tension and excitement of the Pirates trophy winning achievement. The children's enthusiam interest was very evident from question and answer session that followed

Simon also helped a number of Year 4 pupils hone their skills on the 'Haka' before they performed the war dance to the rest of the class.

The 'Haka is a famous New Zealand and 'All Blacks' rugby tradition derived from an ancient Maori battle rite, the words of the haka, have no literal translation from the original Maori, but the action of the dance is emphatic enough to convey its meaning, which is at one and the same time to unnerve the enemy and to invoke the support of the Gods in battle!

E ringa pakia waewae tahahia
E Kine nei haki
E ringa e ringa e torona kei waho motonu
Kamate! Kamate!
Kaora, Kaora!
Tenei ye tangata puhuruhuru
Kana e tiki rai whaka whiti te ra
A hupane! A hupane!
Hupane, Kopane, whiti te ra
