This
coming Sunday the Cornish Pirates, suitably attired in their black & gold
playing strip, will welcome to Cornwall a Bedford Blues side against whom they
had some cracking contests in recent years.. Two of
the closest games were played out last season, when the Pirates won 19-18 at home
and then 17-15 away, which gave them a chance to make it three wins on the trot
when the teams last met at Bedford's Goldington Road ground in November. That
was an occasion when another close game was expected, but which proved not to
the case, as the Pirates put in a superb performance to emerge 26-6 winners. The
margin of victory was a surprise, with it certain that the the strong 'Blues'
side will be fully focused on gaining their revenge on Sunday, besides also keeping
their third place in the league. A tough battle awaits.
Sunday's
match coincides with a St. Piran's
Festival, which has been organised by the Cornish Pirates in partnership with
Coastline Housing. The Festival opens at 11am, with
there a variety of events planned to take place in the park and community college
adjacent to the rugby ground. There will be a Cornwall
Streetgames Festival, a Mini-Rugby Tournament, Cornish Wrestling, Thai Boxing,
Dancing, Face Painting, Fun Fair, and general entertainment etc etc! Also, the
inimitable Falmouth Marine Band will lead a Giant Pasty Parade (thanks to Rowe's)
and the singing of 'Trelawny', and there is also a kicking competition sponsored
by St. Austell Brewery. After the game the entertainment
aspect continues with the immensely popular Cadgwith Singers 'striking up' in
the marquee, and the Cornish Wurzels churning it out in the clubhouse. Take your
pick - the choice is yours! Besides obvious thanks to Coastline
Housing, the Pirates also acknowledge support given by others such as Camborne
Town Council, Kerrier District Council, Speedy Hire, Camborne Science & Community
College, St. Meriadoc School, Camborne RFC, Cornwall RDO Mike Bratt, RNAS Culdrose
(helicopter fly past), and Worldwide Financial Planning - etcetera. Guests
on Sunday include Kevin Lavery (CEO One Cornwall), who alongside 'One & All'
present will celebrate what should be a very special day. A large Cornish
gathering is expected so book tickets early. Family tickets are available
from just £15
