On
Saturday, at the end of another season, the Cornish Pirates wearing their one-off
purple & yellow 'Pirates Trust' charity shirts, will welcome London Welsh
to the Recreation Ground Camborne, where Trevithick Day will also be celebrated
in the town. It is bound, as ever, to be an atmospheric
occasion, and certainly one not to missed. The Pirates beat
London Welsh 38-23 at Pagoda-picturesque Old Deer Park, Richmond, in December.
It was a fine victory 'on the road', with it guaranteed that the visitors will
be gunning for revenge. Some supporters will remember that
London Welsh were in opposition at last season's end, but will be forgiven for
wanting to forget that the Pirates disappointingly lost that encounter 31-18.
London Welsh scored four tries to the Pirates three, all
of which fly-half Matthew Jones converted. Now playing in the Premiership with
Worcester Warriors, he also added a penalty.Last season also saw 'The Welsh' transformed,
especially in the second half of the season. Finishing
twelfth for three years on the trot, at the start of January they were fourteenth
in the league. However, with a sprint of a finish, perhaps mirroring the success
achieved by their national side, they ended up a very creditable seventh. So,
how gave things gone this season? Well, not too bad, them presently one place
ahead of the Pirates in sixth position. Last week they won 32-21 at Esher, it
a resilt that did the 'EEEs' no favour in their battle against relegation. Saturday's
is actually London Welsh's penultimate game in the campaign, as on the 2nd May
they play EDF Energy National Trophy champions Moseley (congratulations to them!)
at Esher. Besides the visitors from London Welsh, the Pirates
will also warmly welcome Dicky Evans to Saturday's match, and thank him once more
for the sincere contribution he makes, which has enabled the club to compete at
National One level and provide supporters with the opportunity to witness a high
standard of rugby in the far south-west. Also, another
special guest will be Eric Tweedale, who played for Australia at Camborne against
a combined Cornwall & Devon side back in 1947.
