Benbow In World Record Attempt

May 2009

There is little doubt that the Cornish Pirates mascot, that good old sea dog Captain Benbow, is one of the club's greatest ambassadors.

An ever-present on match days at Camborne, he goes to many away games when his time ashore allows, and also, as we all know, attends various community events.

During the first bank holiday of the month, our fine Cap'n crossed the Tamar into Devon and joined community group the Brixham Buccaneers who were attempting to break the Guinness world record for 'the largest gathering of Pirates in one place'.

In total, 1,378 Pirates were counted on a Pirates and shanty day which was adjudged a great success, with the figure hopefully to be declared a record as soon as Guinness have checked facts and figures provided.

The previous world record, set near Soltau in Germany, stood at 1,140.

To be counted for the record every Pirate had to wear appropriate attire, including Pirate headgear, eye patch and sword - a la Cap'n Benbow!
