February 2009 Two
Kenyans, Benjamin Ayimba (Coach) and Oscar Osir (Manager), who as players had
a spell with the Cornish Pirates in 2005-06, helped guide their national 'Sevens'
side to an historic victory against the mighty 'All Blacks'.
At
last week's fourth leg of this season's IRB Sevens series held in San Diego (USA),
Kenya beat New Zealand 24-17 in a pool match, the first time in fourteen attempts
that they had emerged victorious against their illustrious opponents. It
was an immensely proud moment for both Benjamin and Oscar, and one certainly to
be cherished, despite their side losing 22-7 when the two teams met again in the
following day's 'Plate' Final. Argentina emerged overall winners in San
Diego, beating England 19-14 in the 'Cup' Final, whilst Wales, whose squad once
again included Cornish 'Pirate' Rhodri McAtee, lost 26-24 to Australia in the
'Bowl' semi-final.
