Popular former 'Pirate' Stan McKeen
was a star performer in this year's Varsity match played at Twickenham.
Man
of the match wing Tim Catling scored a hat-trick as the Dark Blues of Oxford won
a thriller 33-29 against Cambridge, but Stan was also mightily impressive playing
on the blind-side flank.
Staying the full 80 minutes, Stan was especially
effective at the breakdown, with no sign of being troubled by the 'achilles' problem
which cruelly robbed him of his chance to play for Canada in last year's Rugby
World Cup.
Having lost three Varsity matches on the trot, Oxford University
hungered for and just held out victory. Catling's hat-trick was the first in the
match for 74 years, and the points aggregate of 62 a record, surpassing 47 points
shared by the teams in 1994 and 2006.
