The
inaugural Cornish Pirates Corporate Touch Sevens held at the Recreation Ground,
Camborne, on Friday 29th August, was as big a success, as was the Pirates victory
over Newbury two days later. Eight teams took part, along with nine
Cornish Pirates players in an entertaining and competitive event blessed with
some nice weather. The
eight teams played three games each in their pools, with Worldwide Financial Planning,
CPR Barbarians, RTP Surveyors and Foot Anstey Hancock Caffin (Solicitors) all
falling in the group stages, despite assistance from their Cornish Pirates players
Jimmy Moore, Sam Betty, Scott Franklin and Paul Andrew.
This
left the semi-finals between the Press Gang Supporters' Club, complete with Rhodri
McAtee, who played Team Coodes/Miller Countrywide who were assisted by Matt Evans.
TCMC had just too much organisation for the spirited Press Gang team and pressed
home their youthful advantage to win. In the other semi,
Peter Cook's Whirlwind Sports side were pushed hard by the Hub, who were ably
assisted by speedy winger Brian Tuohy, who was called to action at late notice.
Despite most of the team not having played rugby before, the Hub put up a good
fight, but were beaten 7 - 6. The final was hard fought, with some good
play from both sides. However, it was an intelligent and pacey Whirlwind Sports
side, with their female players scoring tries that were worth double, who flew
into an 8 - 2 lead that they didn't lose. The winners won an Associate Sponsorship
for the Cornish Pirates versus Nottingham match, with the runners up winning 10
tickets for the same game. |
