Importance Of The Volunteer
31st July 2008

The game of rugby football has seen so many changes since the introduction of professionalism back in 1996, both on and off the field. However, one thing still remains - and it is vital at that - the role of the volunteer is still mightily important, essential even if any club is to survive.

Over the years the Pirates have been especially fortunate that people have provided tremendous voluntary input in a variety of ways, the list including stewards, gate-duty staff, scoreboard operators, and fundraisers etcetera.

Other volunteers help with the upkeep of the clubhouse and grounds, with some individuals giving of their time daily, week by week, and year by year.

Once again during close season much continued good work has been done, as it is every year by a number of stalwart individuals. Former Pirates players Graham Paul, Dave 'Bez' Berryman, John Gendall and Trevor Swann have been as energetic as ever painting, cleaning and cutting grass almost daily about the club's training base at the Mennaye Field, Penzance.

John and Trevor along with Steve Francis & Margaret and Rod Lyon have also done done a wonderful job at the Recreation Ground, Camborne - where the club plays its 1st XV games.

Press officer Phil Westren commented:
"People such as these should always be appreciated, their voluntary efforts, plus those of others such as 'Lofty' Burton and Shaun Trengove, reflecting well both on the club and themselves. They are, quite rightly, to be truly cherished."
