February 2009 Cornish Pirates scrum-half Ed Fairhurst,
who is a Canadian international, has kindly presented the club with a shirt that
he has recently worn for his country. Ed
is one of Canada's senior and most respected players, who has amassed 44 caps
since making his debut against the USA in 2001.
He
was hugely honoured to captain Canada in last summer's Churchill Cup competition,
as he was when also leading his country against Scotland in November. The
presentation was made to club archivist Phil Westren, who will now arrange for
it to be put on display in the clubhouse. Over the years
the Pirates have built up a considerable archive display, with there framed shirts
on show representing all the leading countries. In relation to the
same, a point of added interest is the news that one of the 1947/48 'Wallabies',
Eric Tweedale, will be visiting Penzance in April. Eric's Australian shirt
from that tour was gifted the Pirates some years ago, so he'll no doubt be delighted
to see it once more. He plans to call by at the club to exchange memories of "those
wonderful days", and it is also hoped that he'll be a special guest when
the Pirates play London Welsh at Camborne on their last day of the season.
