Pirates At Lympstone Royal Marines Base
July 29th 2008

Royal Marines

The Cornish Pirates travelled to the Commando Training Centre (Royal Marines), Lympstone, at the end of last week to 'enjoy' the training challenges on offer at the important military base.

Taking advantage of the facilities available at a purpose built training establishment, the Pirates used a fully fitted gymnasium, the swimming pool, undertook a gruelling endurance course, climbed the commando wall, and participated in a 'gun run', before ending their stay with a 'mud run'!

Coach Mark Hewitt, who is a former Marine, said:
"It was a good few days for the boys, who were made to work very hard both by the Marines and our coaching staff.

At the moment we are still very much in the preparation stage for the new season, but things are coming together nicely."

Simon Raynes, the club's Strength & Conditioning Coach, added:
"For the players, it was the hardest things they have ever done in their lives, the overall challenge perfectly placed in our pre-season schedule.

The level of mental exhaustion experienced, alongside the quite obvious physical demands, should prove invaluable for the benefit of team."

All the players will have benefited from the experience, even though most ended up blistered after wearing military boots.

Overcoming the challenges faced, they were asked at the end to nominate their choice for top Pirate 'Commando', the award going to Chris Morgan who cheerfully displayed good leadership skills and intense commitment throughout.
