Pirates Support Pensans School Fundraiser - March 2009
The staff relay team

27th March 2009

Following their attendance at the opening of Penzance 'Farmers Market', players Jimmy Moore and Marika Vakacegu, along with staff member Phil Westren, visited Pensans School to meet up with fellow Pirates Paul Andrew and Dan Seal.

The purpose of attending the School was to raise its profile and support efforts to raise money for the Precious Lives Appeal and purchase a wider variety of library books for the school's children.

All of the children and staff met up with their guests on the school field, where the Pirates encouraged them to relay run in groups for 45 minutes. It was good fun, and also provided worthy exercise!

Teacher Sarah Edwards commented:
"It was very kind of the Pirates to give up their time to support us and it shows how committed they are to both rugby and their community. I thought it a good idea for the children to have positive role models around them to spur them on, and the Pirates definitely fulfilled the role."

The number '45' was significant, as that is the number of miles which on Sunday, staff from the school ran, walked and cycled for the main fundraising event.

The staff relay team gathered at the school at 0900, where they were seen off by the Cornish Pirates' popular mascot 'Captain Benbow'.

On a beautiful spring day, the route taken by the relay was a scenic one, passing through Mousehole, Land's End, Sennen, Pendeen, Zennor and St. Ives, before making a safe return to school by late afternoon.
