Cornish Pirates & The CPR Learning Space

November 2008

During this autumn term, the Cornish Pirates Learning Zone representatives at the CPR (Camborne-Pool-Redruth) Learning Space at Camborne, have been working with an enthusiastic group of youngsters.

Children from Rosemellin and Roskear Schools were involved in a project to 'build' stadiums to model size with cardboard etc., it gave them the opportunity to use numeracy skills and plan to a budget. Those who 'spent' wisely and kept within their budget, were rewarded with tickets to the Cornish Pirates v Leeds Carnegie match.

The children also visited Camborne Railway Station to draw a route map to help supporters to get from the station to Camborne rugby ground.

Joining John Watson (CPR Centre Tutor) and Mike Crump (Cornish Pirates Community Development Officer) has been Dan Pengelly, the new Cornish Pirates Community Coach, plus two mentors, Kim from Camborne School and Connor from Redruth School, who have gained teaching experience and built up their portfolios.

Peer Mentor Kim said: "Working with the Pirates has helped my confidence in socialising with new people. When I leave school I want to go to college and study medicine, chemistry, PE and drama, and certain skills that I have gained will be really helpful."

Kim added: "We have been very lucky with the weather, so have also been out nearly every day to play fun games such as rugby netball, rugby rounders and rugby cricket. These games help the children with their hand-eye coordination, their confidence, and it enables them to work as a team."
