Bristol v Plymouth Albion

Bristol return to the relative safety of the Memorial Ground after being blitzed by Bedford Blues in the opening half an hour of last Saturday’s clash at Goldington Road knowing that nothing less than a win will do against Plymouth.

The West Country side have slipped to third place in Pool A but will fancy their chances against an Albion side who looked out on their feet after an hour of slogging in the mud at Camborne on Sunday.

Graham Dawe knows that the five day turnaround for his Albion troops could be critical in deciding the outcome of this match and told The Herald, “We'll only have had four days rest, so we have to make sure we utilise people's form and make sure players are not burnt out. We are going to have to look at team selection really closely."

Albion will again be without injury victims Rory Watts-Jones, Mike Lewis, James Waterhouse and Mark Lee. Prop Martin Rice is a doubt after suffering a knock against the Pirates but flanker Darren Clayton could be in line for a recall.

Bristol lock Redford Pennycook described the defeat at Bedford as a “bad day at the office”.

He told the Bristol Evening Post, “The senior players who have been there before have been picking the boys up this week – and they know it's not the end of the world.”

"After the game a lot of us were quite down and upset and disappointed with ourselves and that's how it was for the first couple of days. But we're picking up now and we've got to move on – you can't dwell on the past too much.”

"We don't like losing at all, especially in the play-offs, but it's not the end of the world and there are still four games left in the pool. Every game in the play-offs should be viewed as a must-win, though, and we'll be going out all guns blazing this week."

Returning to action after injury, Tom Arscott is named on the wing and shows one of three changes in the backs from last week, Jack Adams and Luke Eves pairing-up in the centre.

In the forwards, Darren Crompton moves to loose-head as fellow prop Wayne Thompson comes into the front row. Iain Grieve comes into the back row, while Redford Pennycook and James Phillips remain at 7 and 8, respectively.

Doncaster Knights v Exeter Chiefs

The 3pm Kick off at Castle Park on Saturday has Exeter Chiefs visiting the home of the Knights, topping the table but only on points difference.

So far every home team has managed a win at home in the two previous rounds but perennial promotion candidates Exeter Chiefs will prove the sternest test of that record this weekend.

The Chiefs finished second only to Bristol Rugby in stage 1 of the RFU Championship, scoring a massive 699 points over the 22 games. This was a full 69 points more than the table topping Bristol managed in the competition.

"In all seriousness, the game plan is to go out and score more than they do" a buoyant Brett Davey was quoted as saying during training, "sometimes a game can boil down to as simple a plan as that".

Doncaster's prized defensive record, which aided them in their stunning win over Nottingham Rugby, will be tested by the attacking prowess of the Devon side. Disconcertingly for the Knights Exeter have a meaner defence, conceding 28 points less than the South Yorkshire side leaked during what was defence wise a successful campaign

Lynn Howells on the run up to the game also gave a heartfelt opinion, "Saturday will require one of those performances that true players can pull of the bag when it matters" The Welsh Director of Rugby continued "with the challenge of the playoffs, every single game you come across is one of those games".

With few new injury problems the majority of the side which faced Nottingham will be available, on a high after a game many said was one of the best performances at Castle Park this season. The crowd reaction to the performance drove the Knights on to an eventual win, and the players will look to the stands for more of the same support this weekend.

London Welsh v Nottingham

Tom Youngs insists Nottingham Rugby must rid themselves of their 'Jekyll and Hyde' tag if they are going to have a fighting chance of winning a place in the Guinness Premiership

The dynamic hooker believes Saturday's trip to London Welsh is the perfect opportunity to discover some much-needed consistency.

Although their form at Meadow Lane has been excellent, the Green and Whites have managed just one victory in their last nine away games and Youngs, who is dual-registered with Leicester Tigers, knows that has to change if their mission is to be accomplished

He said: "Both our League fixtures against London Welsh were close games and it more or less fits with the rest of our season that we beat them 23-16 at home but then lost at their place.

For some reason we've really struggled on the road and it's a bit of a mystery why that should be. How can we go from such a phenomenal performance against Exeter to losing at Doncaster a week later?

"It's really difficult to explain but the bottom line is that unless we find an answer, this Jekyll and Hyde form is going to severely damage our chances of making the play-off semi-finals."

Youngs, 23, has been an outstanding success for Nottingham since he converted from centre to hooker and he has so far notched nine tries this season

Two of those tries came in the home win over London Welsh - and Nottingham are desperate for more of the same at Old Deer Park on Saturday

"It really is a vital game," added Youngs. "None of us needs reminding of that and we have to go there and play to the same standards that we do on a regular basis at home.

We are hurting after the performance at Doncaster and we must turn that into a positive tonic against London Welsh."

London Welsh have announced that their fixture against Exeter Chiefs on April 17th will now be played at Esher RFC. Both Old Deer Park and Sunbury, the home of London Irish Amateurs where the game had been scheduled to take place, are now unavailable.

Coventry v Moseley

Coventry have been boosted ahead of tomorrow’s game with the news that hooker Joe Merrigan has re-signed for the club and will be available for selection.

Merrigan left the club before Christmas as the financial meltdown took hold and returned to his native Ireland where he has been playing for Connacht A.

Injury to Ross McMillan and the call-up of Matt Dwyer to Army duty meant that director of rugby Phil Maynard was facing the prospect of going into the match without a specialist hooker. Back row Aaron Carpenter was on stand-by to deputise.

Rotherham Titans v Birmingham & Solihull

Birmingham & Solihull travel to Rotherham Titans this Saturday for the third fixture in their all-important Championship Relegation Playoffs campaign, having already secured two priceless victories against Moseley and Coventry.

The Bees hopes of retaining their RFU Championship status has been significantly boosted by successive victories and they travel to Rotherham with renewed confidence. The game is the first of a tough double header, with Rotherham coming to the Sharmans Cross Road the following week for the reverse fixture

A hard fought 22-18 victory at the Butts Arena against Coventry last Saturday has given the Bees real hope of avoiding the drop and pulling off what has been dubbed "The Great Escape".

The players and management know that a trip to Clifton Lane to face Rotherham this Saturday is likely to be an equally tough game.

"With so many ex Rotherham players and coaches in our line-up, this will almost feel like a home game for many of the side", explained Director of Rugby Russell Earnshaw.

"We understand the pride that the Rotherham players take in wearing their jersey. We also know they will be well supported, so they certainly won't be taking anything for granted and we intend to give them a tough game"

The Bees team to face Rotherham Titans on Saturday is: -
1 Matt Long, 2 Stuart Philpott (c), 3 Leo Halavatau, 4 Alex Davidson, 5 Will Betts, 6 Rob Connolly, 7 Rob Bell, 8 Adam Clayton, 9 Sam Brown, 10 Rod Petty, 11 Anthony Elliott, 12 Will Lawson, 13 John Holtby, 14 Mitch Culpin and 15 Mike Penn

Replacements: - 16 Mauro Sperando, 17 Matt Cox, 18 Ross Noonan, 19 Simon Pittfield, 20 Cameron Mitchell, 21 Jack Preece and 22 Tom Foden.

The Titans will be without prop Ben Prescott and hooker Ross Batty for tomorrow’s clash.
