Plymouth Albion v Bedford Blues

Albion prop Martin Rice faces a race against time to be fit to face Bristol at Brickfields on Saturday.

Rice injured a shoulder in the match at Camborne two weeks ago and missed the match at the Memorial Ground on Good Friday as a result.

Graham Dawe will also be without Mike Lewis and James Waterhouse although Rory Watts-Jones could recover from his hip problem in time to face Bedford Blues on May 1st.

Flanker Darren Clayton came through his return from ankle problems at Bristol and is likely to feature again this weekend.

Tyler Hotson told The Herald that he believes the pressure is all on Bristol despite the West Country side beating Albion 15-3 last time out.

The Canadian international said: “We feel the pressure is all on them. "With three teams having won two games, the semi-final places could go to anyone. We know we need to win to stay in the race, but I don't think it is the same pressure.

The boys here are excited, relaxed and relatively confident ahead of this weekend. We know we can put in a good performance."

Hotson has been cited by the Cornish Pirates for striking Laurie McGlone in the match on March 28th.

He will appear before an RFU Disciplinary Panel in Bristol on April 19th.

Former Albion favourite Lee Robinson concedes that all eyes will be on Bristol this weekend as they bid to rediscover the confidence which has deserted them so far in the play-offs.

The 29 year-old Bristol wing told the Evening Post, “The play-offs are tough, because the standard of rugby is higher than it was in the normal league games. It is all a bit of an education – but we are learning fast.”

He continued, “There is pressure with the play-offs anyway, and losing that game at Bedford has added a bit more pressure to us. We know we can't afford too many more slip-ups.”

"But the nature of playing this game is that there will be pressure. It is just a case of going down there this weekend and doing the job."

POOL B

Exeter Chiefs v Doncaster Knights

Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has recalled fly-half Gareth Steenson and Chad Slade into his initial 27-man squad for Saturday`s return match against Doncaster Knights at Sandy Park.

Both players missed the trip to Castle Park last week through injury but Steenson might find it hard to dislodge Danny Gray after a fine place kicking display helped the Chiefs to a vital 21-19 win.

Baxter told the Express & Echo, "We've talked a lot about it as a squad and they will get one or two opportunities in these games, the biggest games this club has ever been involved in.”

"Danny came in for an injury having kept himself prepared well, kept mentally focused and kept his goal kicking up. He comes in, gets a game, gets a 43-metre penalty chance to win us the game and what happens? It goes over. That's because he's put the work in and it's a great credit to Danny.”

"He's had to spend the hours kicking the goals to make sure he's prepared for that moment and that's what we're trying to say to the other guys. We're bound to have injuries or loss of form at any stage and if you get them now the guys who come in need to be up to speed.”

"The opportunities are there, they're just one step away, and it would be tragic if they got that opportunity and they didn't take it. What's fantastic is that if they're in good nick when they come in and it goes well for them, there's every opportunity that they will stay there and get to play in some massive games."

Exeter squad:- Alcott, Baxter, Budgen, Clark, Gannon, Hanks, Hayes, Johnson, Andy Miller, Moon, Scaysbrook, Slade, Sturgess, Tui, Bolt, Cornwell, Dollman, Foster, Gray, Jess, Jones, Locke, Rennie, Sestaret, Steenson, Stuart-Smith, Thomas

Speaking ahead of Saturday`s game Knights boss Lynn Howells told the Sheffield Star, "I said before the play-offs started that any team wanting to reach the semi-finals would probably have to win all their home games and try and pick up something away from home. Having lost at home it is even more vital that we do that on Saturday."

However, Knights Lock Glen Kenworthy and fly half Brooks are both struggling to be fit for the weekend with shoulder injuries.

Nottingham v London Welsh

Nottingham skipper Craig Hammond believes that back to back home fixtures against the Welsh and Doncaster hold the key to his side’s fortunes in the play-offs.

The Green and Whites top Pool B on points difference from Exeter Chiefs and the 31 year-old New Zealander thinks that the Championship semi-finals are now within the grasp of his team.

He told the Evening Post, “Our home form has been really good so far this season and I am confident we can carry that into Sunday's game. We need a big and noisy crowd and a win – it's as simple as that. It's a hard task to play London Welsh back-to-back.

"They will want to come into our backyard and cause an upset – especially after we beat them four tries to nil last weekend.”

He continued, "It's never easy to play a team two weeks in a row but we have to go out there and do a job again on Sunday. Being at home is a huge advantage for us. Meadow Lane is a pretty tough place for teams to come and play and we are in our comfort zone. It could be an exciting one."

London Welsh head coach Danny Wilson told the Richmond & Twickenham Times just what Sunday`s game means to his team.

He said, “Simply put, we have to beat Nottingham up there to have any chance. If we lose, Nottingham and Exeter are in a very strong position and I could not see us coming back from that.”

“If I am totally honest I think we probably need to win all three of our remaining games. But all we can do is win this first one and than look at the situation again.”

Birmingham & Solihull v Rotherham Titans

Birmingham & Solihull play host to Rotherham Titans for their second Championship Play Off fixture against the South Yorkshire side in the space of a week.

Bees prop Matt Long returns to the front row and also dons the captain's armband for this highly anticipated Sunday afternoon Relegation clash

Having suffered a 33-20 defeat at Rotherham's Clifton Lane ground over the Easter weekend, the Bees will be looking for revenge on home turf at Sharmans Cross Road this Sunday.

Last week's set back still leaves the Bees sitting in second place after two wins out of three to date in their relegation play off campaign. Pool C sees Bees with 6 points from their first 3 fixtures, with Coventry just a point behind on 5, whilst Moseley have 4 points. With all four teams still having three fixtures remaining, the fight for Championship survival couldn't be any tighter.

Bees Director of Rugby Russell Earnshaw is expecting another tough encounter "Rotherham executed their game plan perfectly last weekend and were good value for their victory," he explained

"I have every confidence, that with a little more discipline and with our home crowd at Sharmans Cross Road behind us, this weekend can prove to be a more positive encounter.

We know what we have to do and we've been generally ery pleased with our performances so far during the Playoffs, so we just need to continue that".

Bees team :
1 Matt Long (c), 2 Jack Preece, 3 Leo Halavatau, 4 Alex Davidson, 5 Ross Noonan, 6 Rob Connolly, 7 Russell Earnshaw, 8 Adam Clayton, 9 Sam Brown, 10 Ben Patston, 11 Anthony Elliott, 12 Will Lawson, 13 Cameron Mitchell, 14 Simon Hunt and 15 Mike Penn. On the Bench are: - 16 Mauro Sperandio, 17 Stuart Philpott, 18 Matt Cox, 19 Rob Bell, 20 Jimmy Williams, 21 Rod Petty and 22 Tom Foden.
