Children Enjoy 'Fun Rugby' Games

July 2009

Community coach Mike Crump has spent two days attending an RFU play rugby event at Watergate Bay, Newquay.

Working alongside RFU community coach Phil Morris and Cornwall rugby development officer Mike Bratt, children from local schools were able to play fun rugby related games and 'tag' rugby on three marked out pitches, with the added bonus of a surf lesson.

On the second day, during the Newquay Sevens, they used the 02 inflatable tag rugby pitch to practice their line-out throwing, passing and aim their kicking at giant 02 inflatable England players.

During the afternoon, Mike attended a girls rugby coaching session at the Sevens venue, helping coach girls from all over the Duchy - including three from the Pirates girls - who are stepping up to the U18s this coming season.

After a busy two days in Newquay, Mike was on his travels again, this time to Helston RFC where he took the Pirates girls rugby team to join in the host club's fun day.

It was a great opportunity for the girls to work on basic skills, plus fitness and running, which will be helpful to them all. As it was a mixed fun day Mike played along with the girls team and got others involved to make sure everyone had a game and also, importantly, had fun!
