The 'Double Club' is curriculum time used to help school pupils reach their targets.
Fifty minutes is used in the class room working on the pupils literacy, mathematics and ICT, and this is followed by fifty minutes of physical activity.
The club is run by the Cornish Pirates Learning Zone with support from the Cornish Pirates Community Team.
The one present Double Club is held at Mounts Bay School, which has gone from strength to strength - not only in the classroom, but also with the sport – and another is soon to start at Cape Cornwall School.
Mike Crump, the Cornish Pirates Community Development Officer, presently visits Mounts Bay School's Double Club every other Thursday to deliver a one hour rugby and multi-skills session with the 15 pupils who were selected for this programme.
Mike said:
“It has been great to go back into Mounts Bay School and work with the Double Club programme.
I went up to Arsenal FC last year who designed the Double Club, and it made me realise how big this project already is and how big we could make this down in Cornwall.
When coaching is provided the pupils for an hour every other week, we have been working on their core skills, such as passing and catching, which have then been used in tag rugby drills and games.
My aim is to later in the year get the children from Mounts Bay School's Double Club to play tag rugby against the new Double Club at Cape Cornwall School.”
