Boys aged 12-16 years were recently selected from Penwith Secondary Schools to take part in a fixture versus Truro School, which was played at St. Ives RFC.

Pirates Community Coach Leon Pohe, who was there to offer his expertise, said

"This was always going to be a tough fixture for the Penwith boys as they could only spend 40 minutes together prior to the match sorting out positions and getting to know each other, but it is a game they narrowly won 34-22

It was a match played in excellent spirit and to a high level, and being the first such fixture between the teams it was adjudged an absolute success.

My thanks are expressed to Mike Rowe, the PE teacher at St. Ives School, and the staff of the PE department at Truro School."

During the past two terms Leon has also been helping young pupils from St. Levan School, teaching them the rules and basic skills of tag rugby.

The school is made up of approximately 24 children, half of whom are involved in the double lesson on a Thursday afternoon. With Leon's help the school has now set up an after school club as well, which also takes place on Thursdays, and where the opportunity is taken to learn even more about the game and to advance skills.

Amongst the group are two young girls who have adapted to the oval ball and are doing really well.

The feedback from staff, parents and pupils has also been very good, it hoped that the Pirates will have an ongoing link with St. Levan and other schools in the area.
