Autumn Term Highlights
December 2009

After a well-deserved summer recess the Cornish Pirates Learning Zone team returned and certainly hit the ground running.

The summer wasn’t all rest, as there was plenty of activity, including 'Surf days' at Gwithian for the 'Friday Night @ Pirates' group. There were also two presentation evenings with over 200 young people, parents/carers and teachers attending from all over West Cornwall.

As for the Autumn term, it actually started with a new arrival, when 'congratulations' were expressed to Clare and Jimmy Moore on the birth of their son Jake.

John Watson reports on many more highlights from down in the far West of Cornwall………

Firstly, the 'Double Club' at Mounts Bay School is now a timetabled lesson for Year 7 pupils. The teacher 'on board' there is Mike Smith who is really keen. Each session is in accordance with the school's 100 minute lesson, splitting into 50 minutes academic and 50 minutes sport.

'Small Business Game' is a real hit with pupils and staff and there have been many budding entrepreneurs running their own Pirates’ branded store. The maths benefits and links to ECM are boundless.

G&T is another area of growth this year and the eight schools involved in the Media course will all have an assembly in early December to celebrate achievements in school.

PfS is of course our primary concern and we have 110 pupils from 10 schools already over half way through the course. How time flies.

Before concluding this all too brief 'report', we must also mention again the Rugby Conference held in September. Hosted by the Cornish Pirates at Tregenna Castle in St Ives. 30 rugby league and union Centres attended a 3 day conference which had a focus of renewing networks and evolving curriculums.

CPLZ staff and the Cornish Pirates community department hosted workshops. The aim was to deliver a range of workshops that were relevant to Centres with different needs. A resounding success was gleaned from the evaluation and there is talk amongst Centre managers of making Cornwall the annual venue for the event.
