Bedford Blues v Cornish Pirates Preview

RFU Championship Play Off Round 4

Saturday 10th April 2010
Kick-off 3pm

Phil Westren's Preview

We lost our opening Championship play-off match away to Bristol (19-12), and then followed this up with home wins against Plymouth Albion (17-0) and Bedford Blues (22-18).

Last Sunday's important play-off encounter had supporters on edge right to the final whistle, when Bedford, with much to admire in their play, provided the tough challenge expected. As for the Pirates, by their own admission they disappointed in certain areas, but it was the will to win that ultimately got them through.

Recording a victory against such a good team as Bedford was satisfying, and this Saturday, six days after having met at Camborne, it's the away encounter against Bedford when the Blues will be gunning for revenge at Goldington Road. .

Changes in the Pirates side from the one that started last Sunday sees Rhodri McAtee selected on the wing and Scott Franklin chosen at prop. The two players making way are Wes Davies and Carl Rimmer, who are both carrying slight injuries.

With three games played and three remaining in Stage 2 of the Championship, Bristol head Pool A, followed by the Pirates and Bedford. The three sides have won two and lost one of their games played and each has accumulated nine points in the pool, and are only separated by points difference. Propping up the table are Plymouth Albion who have lost all three of their games.

Saturday's game will be the fourth meeting between the two sides this season, with home advantage having counted in the three previous games played.

The Pirates won 25-24 at Camborne in November, lost 19-16 away in January, and then won at home 22-18 last Sunday.
