Having
returned to Cornwall after playing two seasons with Llanelli Scarlets, the man
who led the Cornish Pirates to victory and lifted the EDF Energy National Trophy
at Twickenham two years ago, will be a popular choice. Gavin first joined
the Pirates in 2004, where he spent three successful seasons with the club. He
is relishing the fresh challenges ahead, and at 29 years of age feels he is reaching
the peak of his career. Also, as a new innovation, the Pirates have announced
that they will have three vice-captains, namely forwards Ben Gulliver, Chris Morgan
and Blair Cowan. Commenting on the appointments, high performance manager
Chris Stirling said: "All of us have been aware of and have witnessed
what Gavin brings to the Pirates, and he is a natural leader. However,
he won't play in every game and there will be times when he will be replaced,
and because of this we need a suitable vice-captain on the field.
In Ben, Chris and Blair we have three players with positive leadership qualities,
one of whom at least is always likely to be on the field in any given game. Indeed,
overall throughout the squad we have a good number of leaders, which is always
helpful." |
