Crossing the Tamar from Plymouth Albion is 23 years old Kyle Marriott. A No. 8 forward, Kyle has captained Albion this season and has also skippered Devon in the past. At 6' 2” tall, and weighing in at 16 and a half stones, his honours include playing for the Barbarians..
Phil Burgess, a 6' 1” and 15 stones back-rower, will join from Loughborough Students RUFC, the present league leaders of National 2 North. Aged 21, the former Harlequins and England Students player has been the top try-scorer at Loughborough both last season (12 from 17 games) and this (16 from 17).
The announcement follows the news released in March that 24 years old lock forward Ian Nimmo will be joining the Pirates next season from Nottingham.
Also, further to the above, it has been confirmed that hooker Dave Ward (2 years), lock Ben Gulliver (2 years) and prop Carl Rimmer (1 year) are the latest Cornish Pirates re-signs, following earlier news that Sam Betty, Blair Cowan, James Doherty, Chris Morgan and Ryan Storer (all 2 years), plus Jonny Bentley, Wes Davies, Nick Jackson and Tom Luke (all 1 year), had signed new contracts with the club.
Commenting with reference to the signing of Kyle and Phil, Cornish Pirates CEO Rod Coward said:
“Kyle Marriott and Phil Burgess are two young players with great potential and I believe both will thrive and continue to develop in the environment, which Chris Stirling and the coaching staff are creating.
We will be continuing with our recruiting programme over the coming weeks and supporters can look forward to more newcomers being announced.”
