With it likely that centre Paul Devlin will be unable to play for several months having recently undergone knee surgery, the Cornish Pirates have swooped and nailed the signature of South African back Nick Jackson.

Nick, aged 22, is a former member of the Shimlas club who last year played for Griffons in the Currie Cup, and has this year played for Natal Sharks in the Vodacom Cup competition.

A powerful centre with ability to break opposition defensive lines and score tries, Nick's pace is clearly a great asset and his defence is as solid as they come. He was a shining star for Free State junior sides, but injuries hampered his progress. Now fully recovered, he will be looking to play a vital role as he ambitiously starts a new phase in his career with the Cornish Pirates.

On his arrival in Penzance from Durban, Nick's first comment was that he was looking forward to meeting his new colleagues, and was then taken when he immediately recognised the first face he saw. It was indeed a welcome surprise to see Cornish Pirates back-rower Matt Evans, as Nick recalled that both attended the same school in South Africa.

Commenting on the extra name added to the Cornish Pirates squad, backs coach Harvey Biljon said:

"We are very excited that a gifted young player like Nick will be coming to Cornwall. He already has experience of playing in the Currie Cup, and is now keen to develop his game still further with the Cornish Pirates."
