PIRATES GIRLS GAIN CROSS-TAMAR EXPERIENCE

May 2009

Venturing across the Tamar into Devon to play two matches last Sunday, the Pirates Girls U15s team gave a good account of themselves against two established sides.

This game for the fledgling Pirates Girls was just a little extra special, as it was the first time since starting up this year that they were able to field a full team, which certainly offers encouragement and was a reward for the efforts of the Cornish Pirates and their community coach Mike Crump.

The game itself was well contested, but the Pirates Girls were unable to defend the 'Saracens' county winger who crossed the line three tries in the match

The Cullompton club has a thriving girls section, but the Pirates, fielding the same team, put up a very good fight against a strong 'Cully' pack.

Commenting on the two match performances, coach Mike Crump said:

"Although we lost both games, it was a great opportunity to see where we can go with the girls team and where we would like to be. The teams we played against are losing 90% of their squad to U18s rugby next season, whereas we'll keep all of ours, which should give us an advantage."

The Pirates Girls now have a couple of weeks off to recover and take exams, before training gets underway again at Mounts Bay School on Wednesday 3rd June from 4.15 - 5.30pm.
