Recognising the importance of giving opportunities for local young players who are identified as having the potential to succeed as professional rugby players, Richard, along with prop Paul Andrew, was in 2008 given the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of several other youngsters who have all benefited from their involvement with the Cornish Pirates.

A full-back/wing, Richard first played rugby at U13s level for The King's School, Ottery St. Mary, as well as Exmouth RFC. He also played for Crediton from U14s to U18s, from where he achieved various representative honours - playing then alongside Jack Yeandle, Mark Lee and George Fleming, who are now at Plymouth Albion.

Of interest, Richard represented Devon at age groups from U15s to U20s, and during the 2007-08 season was unlucky not to gain selection for England at 18 Group level, having played for the South West U18s side.

Richard, who has been a member of the South West Rugby Academy based at Ivybridge College, had a loan spell with Mounts Bay in 2008-09, besides making five appearances for the Pirates - two in the league as a replacement, one friendly and two Super Cup games.

That he has developed as a player, there is no doubt, which is something that will surely continue in his second season with the club.
