After
a Twickenham Cup Final and a never to be forgotten all day party to Coventry at
the end of April 2007, the Press Gang Committee prepared for this season financially
solvent, reinforced by several new talented and experienced individuals, and with
a clear plan in place to succeed. After
dispatching two buses to Launceston for the opening game of the season (which
included an exclusive match ticket deal), Coventry was re-visited before the successful
launch of an onboard catering service when the Press Gang travelled to Newbury
at the end of September. So what of the future? Having
struck a deal with national coach operator, First, the Press Gang need no longer
rely on cramped minibuses from hire firms. Our coaches are spacious, boast all
expected facilities for long journeys and also a kitchenette. This allows supporters
to make long journeys to far away venues, that they would not consider under their
own steam, arriving fresh and relaxed. The importance to
the team of vocal supporters at away fixtures has been clearly recognised and
the "16th man" has had a great effect on the morale and spirit of the
squad. Pirates wing, Rhodri McAtee, commented after the
Newbury match, "The away support in particular at this club is immense.
It is very special and makes every away match seem like one back home. From a
personal point of view I get a real lift from it and I`m sure all the other boys
feel exactly the same." Head Coach Jim McKay praised
supporters after the victory at Esher, " The supporters were great again
and I want to thank all the fans who came up today. It wasn`t a classic but we
really appreciate the support." The perception
of some regarding beer-swilling rugby fans travelling long distances on buses
can be dispelled here with one word - Families. Press Gang
trips almost always made up of a cross-section of passengers - male, female, and
children. Alcohol is available on each bus but at cost.
The Press Gang operates a zero-tolerance approach to poor supporter behaviour.
At this time there has been none but the Press Gang are ever vigilant.
