April
2008
Earlier in the rugby season, aspiring young journalists
were asked for a contribution to a competition hosted by the Cornish Pirates and
the Cornish Pirates Learning Zone.
Invited as guests
to watch a Cornish Pirates home match at Camborne, school pupils were tasked with
writing a rugby match report, with over 100 entries received. Appointed judges
considered all entries to be of a very high standard and commented on how much
talent we have schools across the county.
The winner of
the competition was Ben Stean, aged 10, from St Winnow CE School, Lostwithiel.
Young Ben produced an excellent match day report from the Moseley game played
in January.
Learning Zone Manager Kevin Jackson commented:
"It is a great testimony of how powerful sport can be, in that it motivates
young people to produce such excellent work. The club has provided a great vehicle
for engaging young people in producing a credible piece of writing of which they
should be very proud off. We are already looking at how we can make next year
bigger and involve even more schools."
Ben will
now be a special guest of the Cornish Pirates when they play London Welsh at Camborne
on Saturday 26th April, kick-off at 3p.m. He will attend with his family and classmates,
and will also be given the opportunity to meet members of the media present.
