Five pupils from Humphry Davy
School spent the first week of their Summer Holiday at The Pirates Learning Zone
designing and creating a stained glass window inspired by the impact of rugby
in Cornwall.
The window is a collaborative piece, the design
of which came from the pupil's sketches of the ground, the club house, abstract
'rugby' paintings by Phil Westren and images of Cornwall.
Victoria Reid,
professional stained glass artist, whose work includes the window at Trinity Community
Centre, Newlyn, said, 'The students were very imaginative and knew exactly what
they felt would represent the importance of both sport and living in Cornwall.
The final design incorporates all their ideas, including the EDF Trophy, sunshine,
and most importantly to them, the St. Pirans flag and the Cornish Pirate himself.
They have been a delight to spend time with, and they should be very proud of
their work.'
Centre Teacher, Kate Barden
said, 'We would like to thank the Princes Trust and The Big Boost for
helping to fund this project, which has resulted in something which we hope will
be around for a long time. We have all learnt about the process behind creating
stained glass, as well as the important heritage of rugby in Cornwall.'
The
window can be seen, in pride of place, above the Players Bar in the Cornish Pirates
Club House, Penzance.
