Earlier
in the rugby season, aspiring young journalists were asked for a contribution
to a competition hosted by the Cornish Pirates and the Cornish Pirates Learning
Zone.
Invited as guests to watch a Cornish Pirates home match at Camborne,
school pupils were tasked with writing a rugby match report, with over 100 entries
received. Appointed judges considered all entries to be of a very high standard
and commented on how much talent we have schools across the county.
The
Cornish Pirates and their players are hosting a World Book Day Event on Thursday
6th March, as part of official 'World Book Day'.
With reading
something that is enjoyed by almost everyone, there is a good reason for book
lovers to visit the Pirates Rugby Club in Alexandra Road, Penzance, from 12 noon
to 2pm next Thursday.
The Cornish Pirates Learning Zone are looking to build on the success of the National
Literacy Trusts Reading Champion programme by launching a writing competition
for Cornish school children.
Five pupils from Humphry Davy School spent the first week of their Summer Holiday
at The Pirates Learning Zone designing and creating a stained glass window inspired
by the impact of rugby in Cornwall.
Victoria Reid, professional stained
glass artist, whose work includes the window at Trinity Community Centre, Newlyn,
said, 'The students were very imaginative and knew exactly what they felt would
represent the importance of both sport and living in Cornwall
Talented
young website designers from Mousehole Primary School have beaten 25 study centres
throughout the South of England including, Gloucester RUFC, Reading FC and Southampton
FC, to win first prize in a multi media competition staged by South West Consortium
of the Playing for Success Centres.
Nick
Makin leaves the Pirates this season to pursue a career in the City.
Nick's
involvement in the Reading Champions iniative has been immeasurable at the Pirates
Learning Zone, part of the Playing for Success iniative. Over the course of two
years Nick gave 50 hours to the iniative, meeting and discussing reading over
300 children.

invited to take part in an exciting multi media competition through the Playing
for Success (PfS) scheme. The competition aims to excite young people in the use
of new technology and advance their skills in ICT through producing a multi media
