Letter From Tony & Sally Seal

June 2009

During the past week Phil and Sally Westren have received a very kind letter from the parents of former player Dan Seal.

Within the letter Tony and Sally reflect on Dan's first season (2001-02) with the Pirates, remembering other new faces of the time such as Martin Haag, Ashley Morcom, Ben Hilton and Ollie Hodge.

Tony especially remembers the first time he saw Dan play in the Pirates colours, when fitness decided the result in a win away at Clifton.

He also commented that "never in my wildest dreams could I foresee the exciting journey that lay ahead."

There was delight in seeing Dan score his first try for the club in the clubhouse corner at the Mennaye Field against Barking, when it was fortunate that Tony's mother was present to see her grandson crash over. Tony recalls Victor Olonga and Co destroying opposition defences and the last day of the season when the league title was eventually and memorably won at Westcombe Park.

In those early days Tony used to get so nervous before a game that he couldn't eat anything all day until the game was over. Also, one thing that will always stay with him is Phil's announcements over the PA System - "the try in the old Western National Corner was scored by Laka Laka Waq-an-i-ver-eeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

The highlight during Dan's time at the Pirates was the EDF Energy National Trophy win at Twickenham two years ago, when, like all supporters, Tony finds it hard to put into words the pleasure and pride both him and Sally felt on the day, stating

"We are not ashamed to admit that we both had tears in our eyes at the final whistle." Such feelings were perfectly understandable, as Dan had played an important role in that superb victory.

In conclusion, Tony reflects that nothing lasts forever, saying

"Being involved with the Pirates has been such a big part of Dan's and our lives, but nothing lasts forever and it's time to move on to pastures new. Having made many good friends we expect to come down to Cornwall from time to time, as we don't wish to lose touch with you all.".
