James played all his junior rugby at Fleetwood until he moved to Sedbergh School, Cumbria, for his sixth form education. Whilst at the school he played in the 1st XV and also for the North of England U18s.

Sedbergh is a famous sporting establishment, having produced England captains Wavell Wakefield, John Spencer and Will Carling. Rugby World Cup winner Will Greenwood also attended Sedbergh, as did Cornish Pirates hooker Rob Elloway.

On leaving Sedbergh School, James studied politics and philosophy at the University of Leeds, where he gained a second class honours degree.

Club-wise, prior to signing for the Cornish Pirates at the end of the 2008-09 season, James played for Wharfedale. In his four seasons there he was in the starting line-up for all but one of 96 league appearances made, which is impressive for a young man who also captained the side in his last year.

His parents have always been extremely supportive, and he can count on his fingers the number of games his father has missed. Dan Harrison, a school master at Sedbergh, also had a mentoring influence on James's career, and was a major reason why he linked up with Dan's dad 'Clarty' Harrison at Wharfedale.

Having played for Lancashire in the County Championship, James was honoured to be selected for the England Counties team, In total, he has made eight appearances for them, and scored three tries.

With rugby his my main passion, James is really looking forward to testing himself in a full-time environment, and was confident (as all good scrum-halves should be) that the move from Wharfedale to the Pirates will be a positive move for him.

On his arrival he was keen to meet the people of Cornwall, who he feels are different to those in the Dales. As for his hobbies, they include cinema and music, and now, not surprisingly, surfing!
