Alan Paver joined the Pirates from Plymouth Albion in June, 2002, supporters relishing the prospect of seeing the then 24-year-old line up alongside Tongan hooker Viliami Ma'asi in the front-row, as the club started preparations for a first season in National Two.

Our Director of Rugby, Kevin Moseley, said at the time “I've been a fan of Alan's for probably two years, and when I heard he was on the market I couldn't believe it. We're delighted – he's a massive boost to the squad.”

A great student of front-row play, Alan joined Plymouth Albion in 1999, from Vale of Lune.

In his time with us he has gained enormous respect, and deservedly so, but not just from his fellow players and supporters. Held in high regard by other clubs he has played against he is recognised as one of the very best prop forwards in the league.

Surprisingly mobile on the field of play, he is capable of much, much more than the standard duties expected of a prop forward.

He is a potent ball carrier and a superb tackler, a senior member of the team who gives his all in every game.

Reflecting on our win against Exeter Chiefs in the EDF Energy National Trophy final at Twickenham in 2007, there are a number of shrewd observers who felt that our scrummaging provided the platform for victory, with Alan at the very forefront of our effort.

A winner of 'The President's Cup' in 2004, a trophy presented to the player who, in the opinion of our President, has been the most outstanding contributor on the field, his other club honours include being both 'Sportsman of the Year' and 'Travelling Supporters Player of the Year' in 2005, whilst in both 2006 and 2007 he received the 'John Stirling Memorial Cup for Commitment'. In 2009, Alan was a deserved winner of the 'Community Player of the Year' award.

In the first game of the 2009-10 season, a friendly against Cardiff RFC, Alan proudly made his 200 th appearance for the club, and at the season's end - one when he moved across the front-row to play a number of matches as a tight-head prop - his total stood at 225. He also held a coaching co-ordinator role in the club's Youth Section, and at our annual awards was once again presented with the 'John Stirling Cup for Commitment'.
