Joining us back in the summer of 2004, a playing colleague at Worcester who had also joined the Pirates just a few weeks earlier, Duncan Murray, said “this lad will be a crowd favourite”, and he was right!

In our very first home league game he wasted no time in showing his ability in the match against Bristol, raising an already heightened start of the season pulse to set up a try for Kevin James at the Newlyn gate corner. That game was lost 20-28, but his presence in whatever position selected has entertained and helped us to a good number of wins since.

A magician on the rugby field, Rhodri will drift in and out of space seemingly at the speed of light, and is someone capable of scoring tries that others can only dream of. Selection for Wales U21s in 2005-06 was a highlight, as was selection to play for the Barbarians against the Combined Services in both 2007 and 2008.

Playing for the Wales Sevens team has also provided memorable moments - in IRB Sevens Series, in the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne (finishing the tournament as the joint top Welsh scorer despite missing the Plate competition final because of a 'dead leg'), and in the Rugby World Cup Sevens – receiving a gold medal as a member of the Wales team that won in Dubai in 2009.

Club honours include being our 'Most Improved Player 2005', winning the 'Monckton Cup for Achievement' and 'Roger Pascoe Cup' - as the 'Supporters Player of the Season' - in 2006. Also, he was in the side that lifted the EDF Energy National Trophy after the Pirates beat Exeter Chiefs 19-16 at Twickenham in 2007.

During the 2009-10 season personal tragedy struck for Rhodri and his wife Hannah when their baby daughter Emily passed away in December. Rhodri has said he was blessed with the support of his wife, family and the Pirates in helping him get through “an unimaginable ordeal.”

Making his 146 th appearance for the club when the Pirates beat Munster in the final of the British & Irish Cup, after scoring an important try five minutes before the interval he immediately thought of Emily - it was a try scored for her
