Tom played his youth rugby for Eastleigh in Hampshire from the age of eight, before joining the Bath Academy, He went to Bath University to study Coach Education and Sports Performance, and after his first year signed for Bristol, making his 1 st team debut away to Munster, which, in his own words “was quite some experience”.

When Bristol found themselves relegated, Tom played two years in Italy, which he loved, embracing the lifestyle and learning the language. On his return to England he played for Bedford, helping them to finish 2005/06 runners-up to Harlequins in National One, whom they also lost to in the final of the Powergen Shield. A season in Ireland followed, before in 2007 Tom was given the chance to sign for Doncaster Knights, where he was a regular throughout.

Speaking on his move to the Cornish Pirates in 2008, Tom said:

“I've signed for the Cornish Pirates primarily because of their competitive history, plus their ambition and quality.” He had received offers from elsewhere, but his decision was an easy one, besides him also having the pull of a brother and two nephews who live in Plymouth.

A powerful midfield presence (and someone who has also played in the back-row!), Tom made his debut for us in a pre-season friendly against Redruth in 2008, with his league debut following two weeks later when has was a second half replacement against Newbury Blues. By the end of the 2008-09 season he had played 26 games for the Pirates, scoring as an occasional kicker three penalties and three conversions.

Tom hoped to considerably add to his games tally in 2009-10, but he had to endure a lengthy period of rehab following a shoulder re-construction and didn't make a first appearance of the season until February. His return, however, was timely, as the Pirates won 13-9 at Plymouth Albion in a British & Irish Cup encounter, and he then went on to make seven more appearances by the season's end.
