Director of Rugby at the time, Kevin Moseley, said
"I've been a fan of Alan's for probably two years,
and when I heard he was on the market I couldn't believe it. We're delighted -
he's a massive boost to the squad."
A
great student of front-row play, Alan had joined Plymouth Albion in 1999, after
having previously played for Vale of Lune. In his time with us he has gained enormous
respect, and deservedly so, but not just from his fellow players and supporters.
Held in high regard by other clubs he has played against he is recognised as one
of the very best prop forwards (some would say the best) in the league.
Surprisingly
mobile on the field of play, he is capable of much, much more than the standard
duties expected of a prop forward. He is a potent ball carrier and a superb tackler,
a senior member of the team who gives his all in every game.
Alan
has represented both Devon (including a County Championship Final appearance at
Twickenham) and Cornwall, and has played a total of 146 games for the Pirates.
A
winner of 'The President's Cup' in 2004, presented at the last home game of the
season to the player who, in the opinion of our President, has been the most outstanding
contributor on the field, his other clib hours include being both 'Sportsman of
the Year' and 'Travelling Supporters Player of the Year' in 2005, whilst in both
2006 and 2007 he received the 'John Stirling Memorial Cup for Commitment'.
Reflecting
on our win against Exeter Chiefs in the EDF Energy National Trophy final at Twickenham,
there are a number of shrewd observers who felt that our scrummaging provided
the platform for victory, with Alan at the very forefront of our effort.
