Match Report

Conditions were dry and sunny, but there was a strong cross-field wind when Truro kicked the game off, with the ground also rock hard.

The Pirates opened the scoring in the sixth minute when speedy wing Andrew Tester crossed for an unconverted try, him following this up with another seven minutes later which was this time converted by full-back Luke Johnson.

It was proving to be a bruising contest, the Pirates suffering a blow midway through the first period when influential fly-half Ben Brooks had to leave the field with concussion. However, with changes made the Pirates were quickly back in their stride, No. 8 Charlie Tokeley driving off the back of a scrum to score. Johnson again added the extras.

Both sides played with admirable determination, with skills levels and sportsmanship of a high standard, half-time arriving with the score still 19-0 to the Pirates.

Truro played at their best early in the second half, but the Pirates defended superbly through lock Dan Dingley and flanker Luke Cowan-Dickie, though there was a further injury set-back when skipper and talented centre Chris Nicholas was forced to come off with a twisted ankle.

Taking all but immediate advantage, the city side scored a converted try which might easily have set alarms bells ringing, but the young Pirates remained steadfast. Solid at the scrummage, and more effective at the breakdown area, they gained the required possession for man-of-the-match Tester to take them clear to victory. His hat-trick score came after a quick tap from scrum-half Taylor Wearne, with him adding a fourth for good measure one minute from the end, both tries converted by Johnson.

The Pirates were always clear favourites to win their fifth title in as many years, fully deserving though of this fine achievement against their committed Truro counterparts.
